What should we look out for on the packet?
F1: Cross-pollinated & designed for specific traits. Great for growers in challenging conditions. They will produce different offspring & won’t grow the same next year. You cannot save seed - the plants won’t grow true to seed.
Organic: Grown without inputting chemicals, pesticides or biostimulants. The choice for healthier food that doesn't introduce chemicals to the soil & our community.
Non-organic: Created with chemicals and coated, they might not be adapted to grow in your chemical-free garden.
Landrace: Cultivar that’s evolved and acclimatized naturally to a certain geographical location.
& Mitch's Favourite type of seeds...
Heirlooms: Handed down from generation to generation, saved for at least 50 years! They're likely to be more resilient. There is deeply embedded historical significance within the seeds. Having that connection with ancestors gets you closer to Mother Earth!
Did you know that some seed genetics have been patented by big agricultural companies? You can avoid these by going to small seed providers or saving your own seed to share with your friends.
