Winter Prep

Winter is coming, what to do with your patch?!

If you are watching this in the summer/autumn, Charles suggest sowing spinach, mizuna, autumn salads which are great hardy plants you'll be able to harvest through the winter. Other plants to look at sowing earlier in prep for winter are leeks/kale/chard/spinach are great to be overwintered - these can be sown from July/august.

In the Autumn / October - your options are a little more limited, however broad beans are great to sow in Autumn, especially in early November (1st week of November is the best time!).

Other plants that are great over the winter are green manures/cover crops which are brilliant to help supercharge your soil, mustard is a brilliant one (white mustard - synapis alba shown in video). By early December they could grow up to 30cm high!

Garlic can be sown on it's own or intersown with your mustard/cover crop- garlic takes a while to do anything, and where it seems it isn't growing it's laying down it's deep roots under the soil and thrives off the cold weather.

If you've been growing on your patch over the summer, be sure to top up the compost on your patch with 1-2 inches.

Cabbage is also great for over winter, don't be tricked into thinking you need to fleece them up as they are very hardy, you're best to save fleece moreso for your winter salads.

The main job is to keep your beds weeded over winter - not a long job - but a lovely thing to do to get you outside and in the fresh air.
