Pea Supports

Peas are climbers and it's essential they have something to cling on to so they able to put their energy into growth and not surviving against the elements. So make sure you have the correct variety

What you'll need:

- Two similar-sized sticks
- Screw hooks
- String
- Hammer

Make sure your layers reach down low enough for your baby peas to grow up and fill in any gaps so there isn’t too much space between layers for your peas to grow and they aren't reaching too much.

Draw the dibber through the ground in a straight line underneath the support. You can sow two rows of peas to grow up the same structure, in this example, Ed is using the Blauwschokker peas which can get up to 1.5 m tall!

Try to space equally with around 10cm between each seed, fairly deep down to protect them from pests, so they don't get eaten before they've even started. Brush the compost over the top and pat it down.

Give your peas a watering in, they can take up to a week in the ground swelling before they start to germinate.

Then get your hooks and tent pegs to pin it in the ground! The netting is a great way to keep the pigeons away, they LOVE pea shoots. Pull it nice and tight and weave it around the holes and it keeps it on really well.

With multiple rows of peas make sure you either get a netting that fits over all of them or single net them.
